An Introduction
Exeter Phoenix and The Mysterious Freakshow present their annual Steampunk Extravaganza. Bigger and Better than any before, for one day only the Phoenix will be transformed into a Steampunk Utopia playing host to the UK’s best Steampunk Musicians, Performers, Authors, traders, creators for a day and night of interesting couture, unique performance, unusual workshops, fabulous DJ’s, Cocktails and Teapots … there really is something for everyone at this year’s event. Featuring Professor Elemental, The Men that will not be Blamed for Nothing, The Mysterious Freakshow, The Wattngers, Miss Von Trapp, The Copperfield Ensemble, GurdyBird and many more fabulous acts….

We are also please to open up our doors to younger steampunks who are invited (alongside a suitable guardian) to join in the activities during the daytime at the Steampunk Experience. This will culminate in a very special Kids Steampunk Disco with PROFESSOR ELEMENTAL. The Steampunk Yule Ball is strictly over 18’s only.

Professor Elemental
Professor Elemental has created a unique neo-Victorian blend of hip hop and comedy, and is the man behind the world’s first steampunk rap album. His music charts subjects such as steam-powered flight, underwater discovery, and nice cups of tea. With a heart of brass and a fine pith helmet, he embodies the Victorian spirit of invention and exploration. His act has gone like clockwork at Steampunk events and music festivals around the world including White Mischief, the Steampunk World’s fair and The San Francisco Edwardian Ball. He was recently awarded Best Musical Act in the Brighton fringe as well as most Eccentric Englishman and most Eccentric artist.

The Men that will not be Blamed for Nothing
Old school punk rock. Like, REALLY old school. Genuine 100% actual Londoners, The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing come from a past which probably never happened via a present they didn’t want. Less steampunk and more “SteamPUNK”, the British four piece mix Anarchy and Anachrony in equal measure. Expect a robot Sid Vicious covering Slayer in an 1877 East End Music Hall: a murky mix of Doctor Who, Doctor Watson and Doctored History. Not for the faint hearted or those of a delicate disposition.

The Mysterious Freakshow
The Mysterious Freakshow are female-fronted, UK based Alt-Rock and Steampunk Band. Mixing their eclectic time travelling tastes with punk sensibilities.
“The Mysterious Freakshow’s style is awesome; the gentlemen wear top hats, the woman dress in corsets, and front woman of the group, Fey Pink, has some amazing eyes and hair that stands tall like a mad scientist. These four elegant yet promising people all form together under one banner and aim to create a unique sound and an act like that you’ve never seen before.” Review: Brutal Resonance

The Wattngers
Slaughterhouse Steampunk Blues. The Wattingers lean towards the grimy underbelly of Western Steampunk. Their black sense of humour takes influences from Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Sante Sangre, El Topo, Night of the Hunter, Cannibal The Musical, and The Child Ballads. Stripped down to the bare bones, their music is inspired by old and not-so-old blues greats, such as Howling Wolf, Killdozer, Joan Baez, Martin Carthy, The Birthday Party, Screaming Jay Hawkins, The Bad Seeds, Gallon Drunk, The Butthole Surfers, the Beasts Of Bourbon, The Kills, Jawbone, Seasick Steve, Tom Waits, and Prison ‘Hollers’ as recorded by Alan Lomax.

Miss Von Trapp
Murderously Quirky Dark Cello Cabaret: Morbidly Vaudeville Songs, Cabaret Numbers and Performance Poetry to revolt and entertain… Putting the “Fun” into “Funeral” since 2006.

The Copperfield Ensemble
The Copperfield Ensemble Project is an imagining of Victorian music played today: a cross between Chamber Music and Music Hall, this is Classical music to sing along to. Every song and live show is an experimental journey, the experiment continues.

Symphonie Shenanigans, folktronica soundtracks & remixes. Recently described as “like a folky Nine Inch Nails”, GurdyBird combines a number of instruments, from virtual synths and drum machines to zither and her beloved hybrid symphonie hurdy-gurdy in her recordings.

Cabaret Berlin
Vocal/piano Cabaret duo (with occasional accordion), we are a lively act performing sexy, sultry and fun songs from the 1920s-1950s, plus contemporary numbers which fit in with this genre. Donaldo is an established pianist, composer and arranger, with years of experience. Danielle is probably best described as a presence!

DJ Louie Louie
From 50s R&B, rockabilly, 60s garage rock, northen soul, electro swing and blues to Goth, Industrial, Dirty Electro house and funkin’ Rockin’ Ravin’. Louie-Louie’s eclectic taste never fails to miss the spot.

DJ Perfect
DJ Perfect is one of Southwest’s favourite Electro Swing selectors! Taking it far out and beyond the genre… with original 20s hits, classic swing, big band, and the latest mashed-up dubstep retro-electro.

Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde (Compere)
Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde AKA Philip Kingslan John has always been entranced by the dark and the demented, and his theatre company FOUR OF SWORDS specialises in immersive, promenade adaptations of some of the more deliciously twisted stories in the literary canon. Recently DR FAUSTUS at St Nicholas Priory and JEKYLL & HYDE at Poltimore House played to sell-out audiences and won rave reviews.

Ever wondered whether Captain Jack Sparrow would make a good airship pirate? Now’s your chance to find out, savvy? Led by authors LM Cooke and Steven C. Davis, this session is all about getting you to steampunk yer timbers, as you rewrite the original ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ story. We will talk you through some of the themes often used in steampunk fiction, start you off with one or two tiny little changes to the original story (so small, you’ll barely even notice them), and help you to retell it as it might have been… This is YOUR opportunity to stick some gears on the Black Pearl! Sixteen men on a dead man’s tea-chest! I’d be very grateful if you’d perambulate this plank, old bean.Suitable for all, but we advise that older children may appreciate it more; and you might want to have seen Pirates of the Caribbean… After the event, we will provide a write-up of the story that YOU made, and share in the event social media sites. Please note – this session WILL contain terrible puns. Why are the puns terrible? Because they yarrrrrrrr.

AUTHORS & ARTISTS: Tom and Nimue Brown
